What my elementary
school looked like in Canada
(during the winter, of course).
I was born in
Vernon, B.C., Canada. My father, Walter, was born In
Paraguay, and my mother was born in Germany, but moved to
Venezuela when she was a child.
All four of my
grandparents are from
Ukraine, which is where my family's roots are. In
addition to English, I speak Ukrainian and some Spanish.
I
moved to the United States when I was seven, and have lived in the
Montebello area for over 15 years, attending Washington Elementary,
Montebello Intermediate, and Montebello High School.
I graduated from Montebello
High School in 1996. Since then, I came back to Montebello regularly to
visit the people who were an important part of my life, and who were there
for me when I needed it most; my teachers. Throughout college, and especially afterwards, I
realized how important a few teachers were, and how without them, I would
have not accomplished so much, or become the man that I was becoming.
I attended
Point Loma Nazarene
University, majoring in
English, and running on the Cross Country and Track teams. With the
support of wonderful professors, I earned a 3.9 GPA and
graduated as the English department valedictorian. College life was
great, and it was a great experience to move away from home and live
independently for four years. Although it was hard leaving my friends and
family, I learned a lot about myself and was free to grow into the person I
wished to be. I did things I never imagined by going to a small college,
like go sailing with one professor in a three person sail boat, and go to
dinner at the houses of numerous other professors.
Does a teacher have interests? I'm not sure if I ever thought my teachers
had any when I was in school. I love to play basketball, run, bike, and work out
at the gym. I enjoy watching sports, traveling, reading (of course, right? I'm
an English major, aren't I?), and listening to audio books and music (I love
music and always seem around it). Like most people, I like adventure and new
things, cherish those dear to me, and give life 110%.
I went back to
school to earn my credential in math (I actually thought I was going to be a
math major when I graduated. It turns out I wanted to mature and "expand my
horizons" some more first
and being an English major and reading about different people, their
experiences, and lives (real or imagined) helped me to do this.
It's my pleasure to be in my seventh year
of teaching and I hope to have a wonderful school year.
Go OILERS!
