* November 1-The Dell Scholarship Applications are available—visit www.dellscholars.org to receive more information, download the online application, view a video of past winners and criteria for application. 250 $20,000 were awarded last year.  Over 50% went to AVID Students.  Application deadline is January 15, 2009.  The Dell Scholars Program is a need-based scholarship that recognizes academic potential in lower-income and underserved students. The scholarship helps students who have worked hard to prepare themselves for higher education yet may have lower GPAs and test scores because of adverse personal situations or surroundings. Dell Scholars are students who have the drive and potential of academic success when provided with the necessary financial assistance.

The following are some tips by AVID Teachers who have had Dell Scholarship winners:
        * Teachers made it a required/mandatory class assignment.
        * Teacher Recommendations included information found nowhere else on the application.
        * Teachers interviewed the students to give a complete picture of their students.
        * The Dell committee wants to know why, where, and what they do at their work.
        * If they don’t work, students need to explain why and what they do with their free time, such as spend time in community service.
        * The Dell committee wants a complete picture of the student’s day.
        * Edit final application and essay together before submitting online.
        * Mention AVID and how the student worked hard to prepare themselves for higher education despite their adverse personal
            situation and surroundings.

Websites:
* College Navigator helps students and families learn about colleges and universities at http://collegenavigator.ed.gov. College Navigator is a free consumer information tool designed to help students, parents, high school counselors, and others get information about nearly 7,000 postsecondary institutions in the United States. It offers a wide range of information, such as programs offered, retention and graduation rates, prices, aid available, degrees awarded, campus safety, and accreditation. Users can:
        * Search by programs offered, degrees offered, institution type, price, selectivity, distance from home, school size, institutional
mission (historically black colleges and universities, single-sex), extended learning opportunities for adults (weekend and evening
degree programs), and intercollegiate athletics programs offered.
        * Modify or change their search from anywhere within the website.
        * Use a simple and intuitive way of selecting keywords to search among programs at a general level (communications, journalism,
and related programs), drill down through a menu to a moderate level of detail, and identify highly specific courses of study
            (health communication).
        * Make comparisons of up to four institutions in one view, and maintain a list of favorite institutions from different searches

* Collegewise offers college counseling programs to help high school students, apply to and attend the right colleges.  Go to getcollegewise.com to learn more about their free email college newsletter and services for schools, including guest speakers on topics such as admissions 101, starting your college search, UC/Cal State systems, writing a great college essay, and UC/Cal State Application workshops.  They like AVID schools and even have a free blogging service at www.wiselikeus.com.
